Racers sign 2014 Draft Pick Jennifer Gilbert

Akron Racers general manager Joey Arrietta is excited to announce the signing of outfielder Jennifer Gilbert, the 10th overall pick in the 2014 National Pro Fastpitch draft.

Gilbert received Mid-American Conference Player of the Year in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and is the NCAA Division I active career leader in home runs (75), runs batted in (246), runs scored (215) and doubles (62). Her home runs rank eighth all-time in NCAA Division I.
“I have watched Jenny for four years,” said Arrietta, who has directed the MAC Tournament for 11 years at Firestone Stadium. “She is a remarkable athlete and her numbers speak volumes of her potential in this league.”

In 2013, Gilbert became the first All-American in Ball State softball history and was named NFCA All-Great Lakes Region First Team in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

“This is a very exciting day for Jenny,” Ball State head coach Tyra Perry said. “She has put in a lot of hard work to get to this point in her career and is very deserving of this opportunity. We are extremely proud of her and cannot wait to follow her throughout her professional career.”

The McKinney, Texas native will be joined on the Racers by high school teammate and friend Ashley Thomas, who signed yesterday.

The Racers season kicks off May 29th at home against the Chicago Bandits.
