RACERS CONDUCT SEASON-ENDING TOURNAMENT FOR BREAST CANCER
 AKRON, Ohio - The final event of the season at Firestone Stadium will be the Akron Racers Annual Fall Breast Cancer Tournament. On Sunday, October 4th, this event involves local college softball teams including schools from Pennsylvania and West Virginia. All the proceeds will be donated directly to the Akron General Medical Center as part of the Racers continuing support for the “Muffins for Mammograms Program.” The check is presented at the Annual WQMX Bosom Buddies Dinner and Auction each year. This year’s event takes place on Tuesday, October 20th at Tangiers.
The Racers contributed $2,000 from the Fall Tournament last year. Overall, in the past five years, the Racers have raised $7,550 for the “Muffins for Mammograms Program.” The Racers have supported the WQMX Annual Bosom Buddies Dinner and Auction since its inception ten years ago and are an AGMC corporate partner. AGMC’s “Muffins for Mammogram Program” provides free mammograms for uninsured men and women.
Play begins at 8am with the final games of the day a 6:30pm. Tickets are $5.00 for adults, $2.00 for students with a valid ID, and $1.00 for children 12 and under.
In 2007, the Racers “Bucks for Breast Cancer” program raised $9,000 toward a $25,000 pledge to fund the hi-tech equipment used to assist doctors as they discuss treatment options with patients and their families. The equipment is located in the Family Conference Room in the AGMC’s Breast Health Center. In 2008, the Racers collected $8,690 leaving only $7,310 in 2009 to reach their goal. This past summer, the Racers “Bucks” program netted a whopping $13,626 meeting not only their original pledge but collecting an additional $6,316 to be used toward other community-based breast health programs The Akron Racers, to date, have raised nearly $40,000 for AGMC breast health initiatives since 2004.
