Racers Take Series Opener 7-6 Over Diamonds

Racers Hang On For Win in Series Opener

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (June 9, 2010) – There was no shortage of offense in the Racers' season opener in a game which featured 13 hits and a combined five homers. Despite the Tennessee Diamonds mounting a late-inning comeback, the Racers prevailed, hanging on for the 7-6 win at Draper Diamond this evening.

Jamee Juarez (1-0) earned the win for Akron, tossing three innings while registering four strikeouts while Jamie Southern (1) earned the save. Megan Gibson (0-1) took the loss for the home club.

The Diamonds jumped out to the early 1-0 lead, playing a little small-ball and capitalizing off of an error from left fielder Sharonda McDonald.

The Racers tied the game in the top of the second with a solo homer from catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest.

The Racers seemed to put the game away in the third, scoring four runs off of four hits while capitalizing on three Diamond miscues. Lisa Modglin's lead off double and an error on the second baseman preceded a three-run Micaela Minner home run while a Clare Burnum sac-fly RBI provided another to put the Racers in front, 6-1.

In the home half of the third, the Diamonds began chipping away at the Racers' lead, beginning with a Chelsea Spencer two-run blast to bring the home club within three.

Starter Megan Gibson was able to limit the the Racers across the next few innings but not before Trena Peel drove in the go-ahead run in the fourth with a RBI-double to plate Juarez.

Rookie, Carly Wynn was impressive from the plate in the lead-off spot going 1-for-1 from the plate with a three-run homer in the fourth to bring the Diamonds within one (7-6).

Following a defensive battle through two complete, he Diamonds attempted to mount late inning heroics in the seventh when Shannon Doepking notched a lead-off single. Heads-up defense however, resulted in a doubleplay when Minner recorded the out on a sacrifice bunt before throwing out pinch runner, Shanel Scott, heading to third base. With Southern on to close out the frame, the closer induced a groundout to third to earn the save and secure the 7-6 win for the visitors.
